Topographical Assesment

What is the Topographical Knowledge assessment?

The Topographical Knowledge Assessment (TKA) is a qualifications recognised throughout the transport industry, but particularly within the field of passenger transport. It is required as part of the Public Carriage Office (PCO) licensing requirements for London based Private Hire Drivers. This qualification can be workplace based, and is delivered against a recognised criteria as identified by the PCO and Transport for London.

Whilst the delivery method may not be prescriptive, it should ensure the delivery of a programme content identified within the PCO Topographical assessment framework. For continuity and ease of understanding this content has been assembled as Modules, Units and Elements all of which will be validated by the Training Provider (GCS) and the Governing body (PCO). Where the candidate has expressed an interest in undertaking the NVQ (7339) appropriate Modules/Units/Elements should be validated by the Training provider (GCS) and It should also demonstrate that an individual undertaking this course which are validated by both the Training provider and the Governing body (PCO).

The GCS’s delivery method takes into account the requirements and standards set within the City & Guilds NVQ structure. Structured in such a fashion as to allow recognition and accreditation of prior learning the GCS Topographical Knowledge Assessment is geared not only for those requiring the qualification for PCO compliance, but also for those candidates who wish to continue their training on to the NVQ (7339) level 2 and beyond.

The NVQ is based on National Occupational Standards, which are standards written by employers and experts within the particular industry in which you are employed or hope to become employed.

When you achieve your Topographical Knowledge Assessment Certificate and/or NVQ (7339) level 2, it will prove that you can work to the standards expected by employers within your chosen industry.

These qualifications show that you are competent to do a job and have the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to do it competently and well.

The Topographical Knowledge Assessment and NVQs are work based qualifications, so you should choose the units that are to be undertaken carefully, in order to ensure that they best matches the type of work you already carry out, or that which you expect to carry out in the future.

If you are not in work, your centre may be able to arrange a work placement for your assessment with a view to offering you a position within that organisation upon completion of your training.

The structure of the Topographical Knowledge Assessment

How is the Topographical Knowledge Assessment made up?

The Topographical knowledge Assessment is made up of a number of units. Each unit covers a different work activity which builds up to the full programme unit by unit. There are three different types of units.

Structure of a unit

Units describe what you must be able to do to show you can competently perform activities in your job. Units are broken down into

• Outcomes – the tasks you need to do

• what you must do – which describe what activities you have to do for each task

• what you must know and understand – describing and understanding your work

• evidence requirements – a summary of the types of evidence you need to prove you are competent.

Mandatory units

You will have to complete all of these units in order to be awarded your certificate of Topographical Knowledge.

Optional units

You may wish to choose from a number of optional units. You will be helped to choose the best optional units to match your current job, or future career aspirations. All optional units can be considered as evidence of prior learning if you wish to continue your training by undertaking the NVQ 7339.

Additional units

You do not need to take these units as part of your Topographical Knowledge training however; you may decide to choose additional units covering extra areas of work. Those undertaking additional units may incur an additional training fee.

Your training centre will explain which units you need to take and help you choose those Optional or Additional units that best match your job.
